Proper Cleaning Of Your Comforters and Bedding Is Important To Your Health

Cleaning your comforters and bedding is truly important to your overall health.  Not everyone cleans his or her comforters and bedding on a weekly basis.  I know, it sounds horrible, but it’s true. :)

Generations before ours believed that the more expensive a comforter was the less you washed it.  The idea behind selective washing-cycles was to protect the fabric from wear and tear.  They thought that they were keeping custom comforters and bedding from fraying or fading.  Of course, back then, modern laundry equipment was not available and washing comforters and bedding could be a major undertaking.

Manufactures make comforters and bedding to last.  True, you want to protect silk comforters, satin comforters, Japanese comforters, and goose down comforters from the destruction of your washing machine and that is why manufactures have supplied you with washing instructions.  Most king size comforters, queen and full size comforters will require the type of care they can only receive from a dry cleaner.  Laura Ashley comforters, Ralph Lauren comforters and other designer comforters are too costly and elegant to take a chance ruining by failing to follow simple cleaning directions.

Other comforters and bedding can be washed at home on the gentle cycle bi-weekly but only if they are small in size.  If your washer “eats everything”, consider a large laundry mesh bag or take your comforters to the laundry mat.  In fact, queen size comforters, king size comforters and California king comforters should always be washed in heavy duty commercial machines.  You can ruin your home laundry by washing a king size comforter in the small home machine.  It’s a guaranteed way to throw out the drive bearing or trash the transmission!

Bed linens, sheets, and all types of bedding should be washed weekly.  Use detergent that is made for sensitive skin if you’re prone to breaking out.  And be sure to use the recommended amount.  Sometimes, depending on the pH of your water, you may even need less than the recommended amount in order to have the soap properly rinsed from the material.

Good housekeeping begins with your washer and dryer.  Don’t forget to strip the guest room bed down as well.  Nothing compares to the fresh spring smell you get from washing your comforters and bedding.
